I started this quilt for my grand-daughter Natalie when she was a baby. I finished the top pretty easily and had intended on hand quilting it. Realizing that I was being unrealistic about that happening, I gave it to a friend who has a long-arm and frame. She quilts tops for people all the time. (For a fee, of course!) I told her that I wasn't in any real hurry for it, because I didn't plan on giving it to Natalie until she was, hmm...maybe 7 or 8 years old. If I had only known then what I know now about machine quilting. All these butterfly's wings are "free." Thus the name of the quilt. I should have waited until it was quilted to put the butterflies on.
A few months ago she gave it back. Completed. It is beautiful. I'm soooooo sorry I did that to her!! I'm planning on giving it to Natalie this Christmas. She will be almost 7. If you look at the lower right portion of the top picture, you will notice that the wings are a little too floppy. I'm going back and tacking all those wings down a bit. I still want it to have some of that "free" look to it though, so I'm allowing some space between the body of the quilt and the wings. A friend suggested that maybe she should just hang it on the wall rather than put it on her bed when it is completed. I don't really care. I just want it loved!
