One for All

I thought this was supposed to be the Three Musketeers.  Hmmm........ Not only can they not count, you'd think that by now all movie sets have progressed beyond bad backdrops.

Yes, there are actually four Musketeers.  Adding a young boy to the older, but wiser, trio certainly changes the camaraderie among the swashbucklers especially given that much of the movie is about him.  I suppose that his role is mostly to draw in the early teen crowd.  It didn't work for this over-the-hill girl....Maybe it was the mother in me.  I think the writers were making an attempt to appeal to fans of  "Pirates of the Caribbean".  The Musketeers definitely falls short.  Maybe Pirates just are more humorous - after all, who really can compete with the charm of Johnny Depp?  Then, of course, there are all those sword fights.  I'm not one for gore, but I figured that with a PG 13 rating it couldn't be that bad.  I guess that 13 year old girls don't like it either.  For all the stabbing and dying there is not one drop of blood shed.  Amazingly, the swords don't even get dirty.  I guess wearing all those layers of clothing help keep the blades clean as they are being withdrawn from the newly deceased.

As for the bad set - the defense, I'm sure, is that the movie came out in 3D as well as the old boring style of 2D.  (Anyone taking bets on how long it takes before all movies are in 3D?)  The showtimes didn't work very well within our Saturday schedule, so we had to make the choice to see it in normal, old-fashioned 2D.  I realize this is fantasy....with lots of computerize effects.  I get that, but too often I found myself more interested in the background sets than what was really happening with the story line.  Using a computer to make small parts of the backdrops move a tiny bit didn't really convince me that they were paintings nonetheless.  The costuming was done with a scant budget too.  I sew.  There were moments of recognition of cheap trim that is in every fabric store I've ever visited in my life......and lots of upholstery fabric.  It just didn't work for me.  Most movie goers will opt for the 3D version.  That might be a better choice.  The breakdown in the film's budget probably leaned toward making the 3D effect.  I hope so.  Part II isn't far behind!
